Many of the levels are devious and engaging, but the rotation mechanic is the lone gimmick that supports the action, and it starts to wear thin toward the end of the game. You use this rotation mechanic to navigate a variety of clever situations, from open spaces in which you must fall around objects to tight passages in which you yourself are the puzzle piece. It's all relative in And Yet It Moves, a puzzle platformer that puts you in a world that you can rotate at will. The world shifts again, and the man lands safely on a surface that was a ceiling just a few seconds earlier. The ground has become a wall, and the man is falling through space. But just as you're starting to appreciate the do-it-yourself visual appeal, the world shifts. You see a hasty sketch of a man ambling through a patchwork world of sharp textures bound by torn paper edges. It's not a chaotic mess, as I realize that description makes it sound.One glimpse at And Yet It Moves should be enough to tell you that this is no ordinary platformer. Through caverns and forests, it looks like And Yet It Moves has been taped together with random photos from magazines. The game world is presented in flat, paper cutouts. It's a reminder that, when it really comes down to it, context just isn't that important in a videogame as long as it is fun. No context or background story is revealed - all that pushes you forward are ghostly images of yourself pointing the way to your goal. Ambient electronic sounds and wildlife noises set the tone for a measured adventure. Generous checkpoints don't ever send you back more than 30 seconds. There is no time limit (although you can post your runs to online leaderboards), so you can take as much time as you like working a puzzle out. As opposed to many platformers, And Yet It Moves is a pretty relaxed and tranquil experience. It's possible to jump a foot off the ground, give the world a few spins, and then land with a splat because of the inertia you had built up. Your avatar will be suspended in air while the world is turning, a feature that could be exploited if the developers hadn't decided to keep your momentum going while hanging (similar to Portal). Soon you'll have to deal with moving platforms that swing with each turn of the world. The challenges posed by And Yet It Moves steadily become more elaborate. There is a lot of trial and error, but regular checkpoints keep frustration levels down.įinally, a game that acknowledges the world revolves around us. Playing And Yet It Moves, you're constantly discovering new things. You may have to spin the world multiple times in order to manipulate a group of bats into scaring off a man-eating lizard. One early sequence pays homage to the boulder chase from Raiders of the Lost Ark. A spin might give you access to new areas but also send loose rock hailing down on your head to crush you. ![]() The developers have a lot of fun playing with this one idea. A sheer cliff cannot be scaled - until you spin the world 90 degrees clockwise, that is, creating a nice flat plain to stroll across. Conflict is created by the fact that your goal is not immediately accessible. There are no enemies to jump on, power-ups to use, or coins to collect. Your objective in each level is merely to reach the goal.
